I love seeing clients come back year after year as their family grows. Family sessions can bring up a lot of complicated emotions, but they are also so fun. Part of the success to them is letting your family be themselves. If your kids are grumpy, we’ll just work with that. I’m a mom, I know how kids can be, and it’s not worth fighting with them. We’ll do what they want to do and still get cute pictures and experience to remember.
The goal is to get a couple of images that you can put on a holiday card, but mostly capture your family interacting as they normally do. That’s why it can be fun to shoot an activity. Going on a walk, hanging out at the beach, a homegrown session where we hang around your house and show daily life. There are no wrong answers when it comes to a family session photo shoot. Do your kids tend to curl up in your arms and snuggle? Do they run around like wild things? Whatever it may be, I want to preserve the way they truly are.
The beach by Mukilteo Lighthouse is a great location for a family session. Sometimes it can be busy and we’ll have to work around people, but there are times you can find it entirely empty. There’s lots of options around there for backgrounds, and the kids will have fun playing on the beach and dipping their toes in the water. Also, you can get a good sunset for golden hour portraits on that beach.
My final tips for your family photo shoot: for outfits, mixing plain with patterns or sticking to all neutrals can create a really pretty aesthetic. But overall you want to be in outfits that you feel comfortable in, and don’t stress too much about it! I can help you, feel free to send me ideas. Secondly, pick a time of day that’s ideal for your kiddos. Lastly, come in with managed expectations. Kids are unpredictable and children tend to get wilder at a shoot if the parents are stressed. I want you to have a good time, and the best way to do that is to know what you’re getting into.
Now, look at these cuties!
